Fidesz MEP Csaba Dömötör said on Thursday that Fidesz MEPs have backed the no-confidence vote against European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Dömötör said Fidesz MEPs opposed her re-election last year and have consistently called for her to step down.

"She's only able to stay in office owing to the support of the leftist grand coalition, including the European People's Party and Peter Magyar's Tisza party." If she remains in office, "there's a chance the crisis in Europe will deepen further," he added.

Dömötör said Europe had been battling "unprecedented" hardships not seen in decades. "There is no economic growth to speak of, competitiveness is about to disappear, energy prices are sky high due to the sanctions, which in turn fuels inflation, and migration is compromising public safety. Despite all this, they keep pushing through a migration pact that demands the distribution of migrants among member states," he said.

Additionally, Europe had spent the equivalent of 63,000 billion forints (EUR 158bn) on the war in Ukraine, Dömötör said, adding that they wanted to spend further "astronomical amounts" on its EU accession.

"What they're doing is ruining Europe, the best place in the world. We'll do everything in our power to stop that," Dömötör said.
