Péter Szijjártó to CNN: Hungarians will also die in this war, an immediate ceasefire is vital.

Peace can only come between Ukraine and Russia if the warring parties can talk to each other, so communication channels must be kept open, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade in an interview with CNN on Saturday. In an interview posted on his Facebook page, Péter Szijjártó said that if there is no communication between the parties and the channels are cut off, then the hope for peace will be lost, so diplomatic efforts must be redoubled.

He emphasized that as a neighboring country, for us, an immediate ceasefire and peace is vital, and not only because we are neighbors, but also because Hungarians will die in this war. Members of the Hungarian community in Ukraine, as Ukrainian citizens, are conscripted and many of them are sent to the front, so many of them die.

"So I represent a nation (...) whose members have already died in this war"
- emphasized the minister.

Regarding the Chinese peace plan, Péter Szijjártó recalled that State Councilor Wang Ji, director of the Central Foreign Affairs Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, not only visited Budapest before traveling to Moscow, but also visited Germany, France and Italy. "In part, but only in part, we talked about this peace plan, since the visit took place on Monday and the individual points were announced only now, but I must say that I completely agree that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries in the world must be respected" - emphasized Péter Szijjártó, emphasizing that this is a very important pillar of international politics, adding: at least it should be. In response to the host's suggestion, the minister said: there is no question that Russia has violated Ukraine's territorial integrity,
"the Russian Federation attacked Ukraine, and we, Hungarians, condemn this attack,
we condemn this war and it is clear that we stand by Ukraine and call on everyone to respect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine".

The government would never support restrictions on nuclear cooperation, gas or oil transport.

At the end of the conversation, the host returned to the issue of peace: the minister stated that the Hungarian government considers a peace in which Ukraine receives a guarantee of its sovereignty to be acceptable. When asked why he traveled to Belarus, the minister replied that Hungary and Ukraine are neighboring states, so the effects of the war on the country are serious and immediate. Hungary is worried about the possibility of the escalation of the war and its prolongation in terms of time and geography. As he said, he asked his Belarusian counterpart to refrain from any steps that would lead to the prolongation or escalation of the war.

Regarding the EU sanctions, he noted that the Hungarian government does not think that they would be good or effective,
"we don't think the sanctions policy is right, we don't think the sanctions work (...), but we haven't vetoed a single package so far".
In response to another question, he explained: the government will not veto the tenth sanctions package either, because during the negotiations it successfully won all the exemptions that were important to it. He stated that the government would never support nuclear cooperation or restrictions on gas and oil transport between Hungary and Russia.
