Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, has welcomed an agreement to end a border dispute between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, saying it would contribute greatly to regional and, in turn, global security.

The border dispute between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan had long been a source of tension in Central Asia, Minister Szijjártó said on Facebook after a phone call with Jeenbek Kulubayev, his Kyrgyz counterpart, according to a ministry statement. The two countries’ leaders, however, have now reached an agreement to end it, he added.

Minister Szijjártó welcomed the "wise decision" that had eliminated a source of tension and contributed to regional and, in turn, global security.

"It is welcome that after the finalisation of the text of the peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia, the Kyrgyzstan-Tajikistan border dispute is also a thing of the past," Minister Szijjártó said.

"We hope the next peace agreement will be reached in connection with the war in Ukraine," he added.
