MEPs of Hungary's ruling Fidesz-Christian Democrat parties said on Monday that Péter Magyar, the leader of the opposition Tisza Party, "is trying to deny that he was signatory to a pro-war proposal by the European Parliament's grand coalition," calling the proposal "the roughest escalation plan".

The EP's "left-liberal majority" seeks to send further weapons to Ukraine and demands financing from member states, the statement said, adding that "these proposals would contribute to prolonging the horrors of the war in Ukraine and would make Hungarian families pay for them," they said in a statement.

The EP proposal condemns Hungary "for its pro-peace stance" and for vetoing earlier this month the European leaders' proposal to send weapons to Ukraine, the statement said. The draft it said would also eliminate "the right of member states to a unanimous decision" and would introduce decision-making by a simple majority "even in foreign policy matters crucial from the point of view of national sovereignty".

The proposal would involve a "serious risk of escalation" through supporting the use of Western weapons on Russian territory and rolling out European military training to Ukraine, the statement said, adding that "the EU makes further and further declarations of its support for war".

"After we pointed out that he was among the signatories, Péter Magyar is trying to deny all ... trying to deny through blatant lies and accusation the reality that he supports continuing the war," the MEPs said.
