Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó announced on Tuesday that Hungary will sign a new long-term natural gas supply contract, the country’s longest-running agreement for imports from a western direction.

Writing on Facebook from Budapest Airport before departure, the minister underlined that natural gas will remain a crucial part of Hungary’s energy supply in the long term. He stressed that securing gas from as many routes and partners as possible is essential to strengthening the country’s energy security.

“It is not in doubt that natural gas will remain an important source for Hungary’s energy supply. The more routes and the more gas we can procure, the greater our security will be,” Minister Szijjártó stated.

He emphasized that Hungary has consistently pursued diversification in its energy strategy and that the new agreement reflects these efforts. “Today we will sign a new long-term natural gas supply contract. This will be our longest-term western gas procurement contract,” the minister confirmed.

According to Szijjártó, Hungary’s approach is to broaden access to energy supplies wherever possible, ensuring stability and resilience in the face of external challenges. “Hungary has always made serious efforts toward diversification. The more routes we have, the better for us,” he concluded.
