Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, said the foreign ministry has received no reports of Hungarian citizens injured in an earthquake that hit Istanbul on Wednesday.

Staff at Hungary’s consulate general in Istanbul have been following updates closely since the 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck the city, Minister Szijjártó said on Facebook, adding that they are in constant contact with the local authorities.

"The most important task at this point is to confirm the safety of all Hungarian citizens in the area," the minister said.

"So far we have no reports of any Hungarians who were injured, and we are contacting citizens who have registered for consular protection," he added.

Minister Szijjártó urged Hungarians in Turkiye to exercise utmost caution, particularly near buildings that were damaged in the quake, noting the threat of aftershocks.

He said the ministry knows of 379 Hungarians who have registered for consular protection in the country, of whom 134 are in Istanbul. Hungarians who encounter trouble are advised to contact the 24-hour consular service, he said.
