Róbert Zsigó, a state secretary at the Culture and Innovation Ministry, said a government-mandated cap on markups on staples has reduced prices on a range of food products at big supermarket chains by 18.6pc, on average.
Speaking on public radio on Tuesday, Zsigó said the 10pc markup cap had reduced prices of 872 products since its rollout four weeks earlier. He added that the prices of 21 products had fallen by more than 50pc, while the prices of 103 products had dropped at least 40pc.
Zsigó said that 416 shops had been checked for compliance, so far, and no violations had been found.
